SLJ – Toa Samoa

The Summer Learning Journey is coming up very soon. If you want to participate you had to register, once I registered I did one of the prep activities. Writing – Where Angels Fear To Tread Y9

Task 3:

Where angels fear to tread

This task is about reading to find information and make inferences.

Read ‘Where angels fear to tread‘, then answer the following questions.

a)

 

 How old is Ngorongoro Crater?

 

Two millions years old

 
b)

 

 What word does the writer use in the middle of the story to indicate that he wasn’t scared of buffalo?

 

“But they weren’t lions, only buffalo”. This probably means if you met or saw a buffalo he wouldn’t be frightened. He referred it as it only a buffalo and he didn’t  know the danger of that animal.

 
c) What would have been a useful item to take on the walk to the lodge?
Flashlight because it was dark and they couldn’t see much…

 
d) Explain how the saying in the final line, “Fools rush in where angels fear to tread”, goes with the story.
 

“Fools rush in where angels fear to tread” refers to a person who behaves impulsively; they don’t think before reacting. The saying goes with the story because a group of people, Halina and the speaker travel to Africa before knowing very little about it e.g. dangers, animals, people.

(my explanation) This line goes with the story “I waved my arms at them, and they moved out of our way”. The author and Halina were foolish because they walked into a random place not knowing where they were. They do know that wild animals roam free, especially at night. They waved at the animal as if it was a flock of NZ sheep but they didn’t know how dangerous that animal was.
e) What two lessons could be gained from this story?       i. Think carefully about where you are going and what you are doing (if you don’t know the place).

Ii. To always stop and think before you do something, especially when you encounter a wild animal.

 

Tech/Hard Materials – Last Session

Last week the year eights had their last tech rotation. My last rotation was hard materials. I really enjoyed the session and the product we were making. We were making a pendant or brooch. I chose turtle shape brooch. The process was quite tricky but I had to trust it. It looks very good and I’m proud of it. Thanks to my teacher Mr Grundy! I hope you have enjoyed this post. Extension – T4 Project

This term for extension (our last term and year) we are doing a fun project. This project is based on escape rooms, literally. Our teachers had a recent experience of this so this is what our project is based on. We chose horror as our genre. Our escape room is about the movie ‘Smile’. We are almost done which is pretty exciting. We are cutting out keys and making padlocks. I am working for Angelica, Aye, and Kiarah. I hope you have enjoyed this post. Writing – David O Mckay

Last week for our research task we had to research about a famous person or civilization. I was in a group with Mele once again. Maths – Solubility

Today for maths (which was combined with science) we did a fun experiment. We were split into mixed groups and worked together. We had to add 100ml to a cup and keep on adding 5g of sugar until it can’t dissolve. Some classmates got over 155g but my group decided to finish at 120g. It was quite fun and interesting to do.
